Have a Safe Diwali: The Dos and Don`ts this Diwali

Hurray. The long awaited day has finally arrived. Starting today (15.10.09) diwali starts. Today is Dhanteras. The air is already filled with Dhoom and Dhadaka with crackers being burst at every corner of the city. An integral part of Diwali celebration is Fireworks. To reduce the pollution level, it is always advisable not to burst crackers. But then diwali is also incomplete without crackers. The Festival of Lights will lose its luminosity and charm if it is not for crackers, sweets, lights, fun and parties. All that is required in this season is that you enjoy every bit of it with family and friends. Don't let the bright and beautiful festival turn in to a nightmare. All you can do is take a few basic precautions to make sure that the Diwali is safe, bright and colorful.

Dos for a safe diwali

  • Buy Fireworks from the licensed shop.
  • Keep crackers in a closed box, away from source of fire.
  • Read and follow the safety instructions issued with the firecrackers packet.
  • Open spaces like playgrounds, front or back lawn are ideal areas for bursting crackers. Play out side the house.
  • Use crackers with low noise level only.
  • Stand back while lighting the crackers.
  • Make sure that the crackers are at arm’s length.

  • Don’ts: Things to avoid
    • You should not burn crackers in crowded, congested places, narrow lanes or inside the house.
    • Do not fire crackers in staircases or at the boundary of the house.
    • Do not use crackers near inflammable material like oils, heaps of rubbles etc.
    • Don’t let children burst crackers by themselves. An adult should always accompanying them.
    • Many people indulge in covering crackers with tin containers or glass bottles for extra sound effect, but this can be extremely dangerous

Gold Rate Today: Today on Dhanteras Gold Rate is Rs.16500 per 10 gm

Today is Dhanteras (15th October 2009) . Delhi’s yellow metal fever is at its peak today, two days before Diwali. The city is set to spend over Rs 65 crores today on Gold. The rate is more than Rs. 16000 per 10 gm of gold and and silver is ruling at an all-time high of around Rs 28,000 a kg.

Whether as jewellery or as investment, demand for gold reaches its peak during dhanteras because it is considered auspicious to buy gold or any metal object today. Gold traders and jewellers say that demand is actually lower than last year. Last year, Dhanteras/Diwali was a more subdued affair because the economic slowdown had just begun. There was no festive buzz that time. This time, there’s loads of buzz, but not in terms of sale, thats what the traders are saying. Pawan Jhalani, president, Sadar Bazar Sarafa Vyapar Mandal said “The rate of gold was much lower last year (about Rs 12,000 per 10 gm), so quantity-wise , the demand was about 150 kg per day. This year, since the rates are very high (Rs 16,500 per 10 gm), the quantity’s lower - 80-100 kg per day."
Vikram Khanna of Khanna Jewellers in Karol Bagh said that the signs of recovery in the economy were showing in the gold market. "The number of buyers is picking up though it is not yet boom time. Sales are above average," Khanna said. Preeti Kaur, chief GM, publicity, precious metals, MMTC, says, “Plain gold’s a huge hit with consumers because it’s the safest investment.” Taken all together, Delhi and NCR will probably buy gold worth more than Rs 65 crore today, and these are conservative figures . Let’s hope this golden period only gets brighter next year!

Rich or poor, financial crisis or prosperity, decorating the house during Diwali is an important activity for everyone. Extreme importance is given to cleanliness during Deepavali. It is believed that Goddess Lakshmi visits those houses which are clean. To give a warm welcome to Ma Lakshmi houses are cleanned, lighted with diyas and lamps and decorated. Decoration during Diwali should not always be associated with costly renovation and new paint. Time, few constructive and creative ideas, patience can give every home a makeover and new look during Diwali. Decoration cannot be done on a single day neither the cleaning. Step by step start cleaning the house. Make sure that you get rid of all the unwanted things, trash, spider webs, etc. from your room.Forget about painting the house in a short period. Instead you can give the wall a new look by using your creativity and imagination. Use wall rugs, floor rugs, old colorful Saris, etc. on the wall. Go for bright colors. Use old sarees as curtains. This gives a very traditional look. Change the cushion covers, bed covers. Hang door torans. Decorate the wall with beautiful wall hangings. If you have time and ideas, change the arrangements in living room. Rearrange the furniture. A small change from regular arrangements will bring a lot of difference. Bring in new green plants. You can also decorate the room with fresh flowers and garlands. Diwali is all about lights. Make sure that all the lamps are working. Clean the chandeliers. You can use different types of earthen lamps or diyas, candles to light your room. You can place diyas of different shapes and sizes and a candle at the corner of the room.
